This international journal is the publication of the Association for Late Antiquity which was founded in Lyon to prepare for the International Congress of Christian Archaeology held there in 1986. The Association’s journal aims at enriching the study of written texts from the fourth to the seventh centuries by setting these into a wider context using a multidisciplinary approach covering history, archaeology, epigraphy, law and philology.

Founded in 1919 as the Bulletin of the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem, the journal was renamed the Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research (BASOR) in 1921. BASOR is an interdisciplinary English-language journal published by the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR). The journal appears quarterly (in February, May, August, and November) and includes technical articles covering the entire Near East and eastern Mediterranean world from the Palaeolithic period through Islamic times. The principal subject areas of the journal include art and archaeology, history, anthropology, bioarchaeology and archaeozoology, archaeometry, geography, philology and epigraphy, and literature.
BASOR is especially interested in reports of original research and discussions of problems raised through excavations or other research. The journal also publishes preliminary reports of ASOR-affiliated projects, articles analyzing the current state of scholarship in a field, book reviews, and review-articles. Finally, the journal publishes occasional theme issues relating to topics of broad scholarly interest.
